welcome scott & joy claybrook
King's Cross has been praying and waiting upon the Lord as it has sought its next Lead Pastor. The Pastor Search Team has worked hard the last 10 months. Through many many hours of resume reviews, listening to sermons, face to face interviews, and most of all lots of prayer, the Pastor Search Team unanimously chose Scott Claybrook as their candidate to be Lead Pastor of Kings Cross. On September 9th, Scott was unanimously voted in as Lead Pastor. To God be the glory!
Scott & Joy Claybrook
Dear KCC Family,
We are thrilled to be with you and to take this step of common ministry together. Over these past months we’ve fallen in love with the wise, kind, and generous members of your search committee. Through them we’ve also grown to love King’s Cross, Tullahoma, and the future work we sense God inviting us to join here.
We have felt a deep connection to you from the moment we began learning about KCC’s history and journey. Your commitment to taking risks, dreaming big, and loving broadly has inspired us. We cannot wait to meet you! There’s so much more to say, but as the author of 2 John puts it, “I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete” (2 John 12).
With grace and gratitude,
Scott, Joy, Griffin, and Baby Boy Claybrook
Scott was born and raised in Franklin, TN. He was blessed to grow up in a home where faith and the gospel were valued highly and taught openly. Scott became a Christian at the age of 9 and was baptized in his home church, Clearview Baptist. He developed a deep love for the local church during his teenage years when Clearview became a needed place of encouragement and belonging. Between his sophomore and junior years of high school, Scott felt called to ministry and left behind plans for a career in computer science for a life of full-time ministry.
Scott attended Belmont University where he majored in Christian Leadership, a degree focused on Biblical studies, theology, and Christian ministry. While there he met Joy Kayser, a social work student, and fell in love with her from the start. Joy was a bit slower to warm to Scott, but she came around in the end! They began dating in early 2009 and were married in 2010. After completing his work at Belmont, Scott moved to Atlanta to begin seminary at the McAfee School of Theology. There he pursued studies in ministry and theology. It was at McAfee Scott first felt a strong sense of calling to work with young adults following seminary.
After completing seminary in 2012, Scott and Joy moved to Knoxville where he continues to serve as First Baptist Knoxville’s Minister with Young Adults. Scott has a deep passion for reaching his generation—the millennial generation—with the gospel. He has long held a sense of calling to leadership and lead pastor work. First Baptist has a deep commitment to preparing ministers for leadership, and his time there has not only prepared Scott for Lead Pastor work but given him invaluable experiences, insights, and wisdom from working alongside young adults for the past six years.
Joy and Scott are parents to Griffin Claybrook, born in December 2016, and are expecting a second baby boy in October 2018. Scott loves Braves baseball, epic fantasy books and movies (like Lord of the Rings!), and plain glazed donuts. His favorite Scripture is John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
